I'm getting mixed feedback from two different people on L25 scarlet plecos, they say the 7 pointer is different than a regular pleco, while the other says there is no difference? Can anyone confirm if there is a difference or not? And what is it exactly that makes them different?

In case you didn't know, the term 7 pointer means that 7 major fins (dorsal, pectorals, pelvics, anal, caudal) show some colour on them. They can also be called 5 and 3 pointers.

7 pointers are considered to be higher quality but it doesn't account for the extent of the colouration. The only difference is aesthetical, it doesn't influence the health or vigour of the fish.

No problem. I forgot to say that apart from the dorsal and caudal fins, the colour is only the hard fin rays not the soft rays.

Here are some pics from Planet Catfish to help.

Both of these fish are 7 pointers, but as you can see the first has far more colour in its fins whereas the second has the colour in the tips (of the pectoral and pelvic fins).

A juvenile 7 pointer.

This one looks like a 5 pointer (the pectorals lack the colour).

I should also say that I dont have any L25, so I am happy to be corrected, but this is the extent of my knowledge.

This is exceptional information! I am so grateful! Been looking for L25's for some time now, and no such luck as of yet! Thanks again!

You missed it vendor on AW and WW just recently posted a shipment but they sold out in no time. I just checked and as of the
5th of June he still had some available on the second shipment. You could check him.

How much is the average price of an L25 now then? My LFS has had one in stock for absolutely ages now priced at £80...its now down to £67 as its not budging (personally think its to do with the fact that its off in a corner where nobody can marvel at its....'alright' colouring..lol)

If its a steal as far as avg price goes for em i may have to dish out

Price will of course depend on the size (and maybe the "points," amount of red-orange) of the individual. I would guess one should expect to pay $75 to $100 for a small 4-5 cm (2-2.5 inch) individual. Someone on aquabid right now wants $170 for a 9-10 cm individual (alas, no pic, so we can't see the "points"):

So if the "£67" individual is a full size adult "7 point" L25, then I think that would be a very good price.

Interesting...
Well yeah it is an adult at about... near 15cm. Will make an effort to get in an count its points over the next few days. Only reason im hesitant is its more orange and brown than the prefered colouring. If i were to find a mate for it would there still be the posibility of it breeding fry more inclined towards the red/black combo?
