I'm new to pleco, still deciding on which I should get. Always love the panaques, L27 in particular but I not know much about them. Questions:

What are the difference between L27a, b, c, d?

What's their growth rate? I heard they only grow 1" a year. Please tell me they grow faster than that.

Can their diet consists of pellets? Massivore to be exact.

The different letters after L27 is where they are from.
They grow quite slow IMO
They are herbivores so they should not eat high protein carnivore pellets. I feed my L190 with sweet potatoe, brusselspraut carrot and peas. They do need to have soft and hard wood in the tank due to their feeding habits on cellulosa.

I thought they're categorised on their goldline, seems not. Shouldn't or wouldn't eat high protein? Most of my fish eat pellets so I would like the pleco to go for pellets too. Ain't plecos eat dead fish? Or that depends on the species also?

There’s six different variants of L27s.
High protein diet is not good for them some will say they feed massivore, carnivores I dnt because I dnt want to chance mine from getting bloats. I’m sure you can get more than 1” growth per year royals are pigs.

Many plecos are opertunistic eaters. But the genus panaque is stricly woodeaters but enjoys vegestables such as i mentioned. As long as you have driftwood like manzanita, mangroove and others you should be fine. If you want a pleco that actually can eat high protein meat based pellets you should look into the pseudacanthicus species. And some of the leporacanthicus species. I have and psudacanthicus spinosus that loves mussels and prawns. He is a great cleaner after my fahaka

Hmm, sounded like not my cup of tea & a bit tricky. Any thoughts on Acanthicus sp? Adonis or hystrix? L155 or L193? I like the brutal-ness of their looks. Some say the grow faster, true?

I have laid my eyes on A. adonis for some time now but havent found any bigger example. Ive heard they grow quite fast but i want a big individual right away. As they can grow up to 100cm i want at least 30-40cm from the start.
They do love meaty food like fish, prawns, shrimp and mussels.

My albino Adonis went from 1.5” to 4” in 2.5 months.

So, will be getting a Acanthicus sp then. Try to find an albino if not super expensive, love their details. But full black, can barely see a thing

Nice. They grow fast & eat meats, my kind of plecos. Does albino are captive bred or wild caught? If wild, the price sure are steep

Mine was captive breed I’m sure the original albino were wild but the price range for small one are $100-150
