Are these guys better solo or in pairs/groups? Has there been any success in breeding?

Depends on how big they are and how big the tank is.

According to Planetcatfish they're territorial and best kept alone. I've kept a Watermelon with a Dull Eye with no problems, but the Dull Eye was half the size of the L330 so that may have been the determining factor. The size difference might have made the L330 consider the Dull Eye Royal a non-threat due to his size and left him alone because of that. You can give it a go, but remember to always have a spare tank just in case so worse case scenario you have somewhere to put the one getting beat on till you rehome him/her.

My watermelon is only about 7" in a 125. I am going to upgrage to a 240 soon. I used to have him housed with a larger sailfin pleco but now he is alone. They used to fight sometimes but nothing serious. Are they slow growers? Mine hasn't grown probably more than an inch in years and it eats tons but doesn't seem to grow. I like to keep fish in pairs if possible and I just wanted to know if anybody else had kept several together before I get another.
