Does anyone keep their Pleco's in a house with a water softener? I have very hard water, and I want to get into Pleco's (want to take a stab at breeding the L46). So I assume they will be more successful in soft water. But I didn't know if I should pursue natural softening methods, or if I should invest in a water softener for my house.

I don't want to rent a water softener and then have everything die in the high sodium content.

Any advice?
Thanks,

I have never bred plecs, but have a variety of L numbers and my water is hard city water. They seem to do well, especially the L46 which has grown significantly.

This might explain better than I as I do like how the article is written how it explains the whole concept together

I simply do not chase PH when im working with what water I have. i also do the TDS measurement as well on my end here. I think those “water softener” label is a misleading description on what goes on when sodium and calicum i think is being changed - dont quote me lol everyones breeding Zebras worldwide with varying water parameters IMO
