I've just started breeding cichlids. I like it! I want, in a few years, to start breeding a few species as a kind of business. I've just had some success with salvinis. Would have done better I think if I removed the fry while there were still a lot of them. As it is I've ended up with about 30 or so fish approaching the 1 inch mark. I can also do angelfish as a bread and butter seller. They're easy enough. I love the savini and I would like the 3rd species to be LaCeiba Freddys. What's the minimum tank size for a pair? I got away with a 40 long for my young pair of Sallys and will be upsizing to a 55 after the next spawn. I was thinking of doing something similar with the Freddys when I get closer to being ready. What's the minimum tank size for a full grown pair? Will a smaller pair work in a 75 gallon, or is it a matter of aggression rather than size with them?

Minimum tank size would be 135 gallon in my opinion. I would not keep a pair of any parachromis in a 75gallon. You need the 72" foot print to give them room to swim. I have my pair in a 150 gallon and its enough room for them to get away from each other when they need to. The foot print of the 75, 90 gallon isnt enough in my opinion. However, a lone female in a 90 would be fine. If you cant provide at least a 135 i wouldnt bother with freddys as they have the typical parachromis attitude and will eventually end up killing one or the other when one decides they want the whole 75 gallon to themself. Just my 2 cents.

I tend to agree with the above, unless your pair is so perfectly compatible, the female will probably be killed. And in small tanks fry are more often eaten.
I don't think the depth matters as much as the footprint, a 100 gal 6ft tank might also work.

I don't know if my question is clear. I know I will eventually need a bigger tank. but I was hoping to maybe get 1 or 2 spawns from a young pair done in a 75. The ONLY reason being that everything will be done between address changes. If they'll need a 180 or whatever even for a young small pair, then that's fine. I'll just wait till after the move. The only reason I thought to ask is because it is working with my salvinis. I would never try to keep a full grown pair in a 40 long but at 5 inches for the male and 3 1/2 inches for the female things have gone smoothly for them during their first spawn.
