I'm looking to build a little air driven moving bed filter out of a shampoo bottle, like I saw on teh yootoobs.

I've peeled the labels off the bottle but there's still some sticky gunk left behind. I sort of assume it's not very toxic, but I'd love a confirmation. It's kind of annoying to get off and I don't have rubbing alcohol or goo-be-gone on hand.

Depends where the label was affixed to the packaging. Many overseas packagers use adhesives that can be mildly to very toxic. Most US manufacturers use starch-based labels that are non-toxic.
But, if all it takes is a bottle of isopropyl alcohol to ensure safety then, get the isopropyl.

Heh well I decided it didn't seem too bad before seeing this and it's in the tank. It's a new tank so all it can kill off is the live bio media I put in there. I'll stick a feeder molly in there before I try anything else, haha.

Zippo/Ronsonol lighter fluid or some type of benzine works the best at removing labels without a very harsh smell IMO.
