I got some at a LFS and asked if it raised the pH and they said no. I have a SA community and want to know if it does or not. obviously i dont want it to.

i did the vinegar test and it didnt really seem to fizz... but i think lace rock is an african type rock...

anyone?

Even if it increases the pH, it won't increase the pH by a large difference. Don't worry too much about your pH. The fish will be fine.

I don't know if it will or not.

But for a test

Put it in a bucket of tap water and test it before and after 24hrs or so and see what happens.

If you test it let us know what happens.

Post a pic of this lace rock. There are natural and artificial types of "lace rock". Lace agates are simple compressed silicates that are inert in aquaria. Another lace rock is tufa which is a compressed calcium carbonate which will yield an increased pH. The rate and level depends on the level of compression of the rock. Man-made lace rock is a form of aragocrete and, if properly made, will only slightly increase pH. However, factory seconds and improperly made lots of lace rock have been found to jump pH to over 9.0.
As stated, soaking and testing is preferred to remove doubts.
