Went to a house today to pick my son from a play date and was invited in. across the room I could see a 55g tank with about 1/4 of the water evaporated and the glass totally green with algae. I told them that they should finish emptying the tank before the water starts to smell. She said: "oh no, there are fish still in there."   After I picked myself off the ground, I found that there were a few Africans in there. I did tell her that I could help her understanding tank maintenance, or could help her dismantle the tank if she needed help. :nilly: :nilly: :nilly: :nilly:

I do not think I need any responses, I think I just needed to vent.:irked:

I usually leave algae on sides and back of tanks. Its a great natural filter and source of food. I also build my tanks higher then I need and deliberately leave the water level low (I dislike lids). Some people keep goldfish in bowls with no filters and manage to keep them healthy and alive for years. I dont know how they manage so perhaps they are better fishkeepers than you and I ???

Some food for thought. Everyone has different ideas.

You've been posting great posts around the boards considering you're such a new member. But you dropped the ball on that one

i dont mind a little algea on the back of mine either. Some people are just too busy these days and you cant always have a perfect looking tank. Unless you are close friends it is very rude to tell people how they keep there house and pets. How would you like it if they complianed about your child?

I was nicely saying that this was a very neglected tank. I guess I was not clear, because the glass was NOT. You could NOT see through, TOTALLY green, neglected for months, could not see a fish, even if you tried, through the opaque, algae growing wildly out of control. :headshake
I think I need therapy now.

I'd let them keep the kid for a week to teach them a lesson!!!

Fishhead - You did everything right IMO. Offered fishkeeper some education and/or to find the fish new homes. From her reaction (reading between your lines) it wasnt needed so I was just making a comment, ie I wasnt criticising you at all even though it probably came accross that way. My post was mostly inspired because I have found the MFK forum extremely open and friendly.

Cohazard - If I have dropped the ball, thats a good thing since I dont want to be right all the time :) but my comment about the different ways people keep fish is true. My grandmother has kept her prized goldfish in a simple bowl for over 12 years to date!! When offered a larger tank with filtration she answered that water changes were easier in a bowl (to her credit she did try it). When asked how she knew when and how often to change water, she told me that her goldfish just "tells her". So she does know how to watch & understand fish even if she doesnt know it. Some of the best fish farms I have visited are incredibly low tech. One of the best tropheus breeders I know has fontanalis and hair algae so thick that you cant see anyfish at all.

As per my above post ... Its just some food for thought. As my grandmother says; Having a lot of knowledge doesnt mean your smart!!
