I'm currently keeping 8 of these. Although often confused and sold as Laetacara thayeri, as adults they look very different from that species. They're not very colorful but I find them quite beautiful, especially their dorsal fin, which has really nice trailers. Two have paired off, so hopefully they'll lay some eggs soon.

You can see the dorsal fin trailers on the male in this photo. Both sexes have these trailers.
 
These must be what I gave away. They were sold to me as thayeri but look identical to yours. They were actually big, chunky fish when I passed them on -- males were probably 5" or so and FAT.

Good luck with them. Like you said, not very colorful, but beautiful fish with awesome fins. Mine were very yellow.
