Is there any way to sex Laetacara? I have two larger ones (not sure which sp.) that I got awhile ago from a lfs that I think got them from Rapps. Saturday, I purchased two more (labled curviceps) from a lfs. I picked out the two with the most color.

One of the new ones seems to be a male (flaring, deep, yet bright, color) and he is chasing around one of my old ones and the other new one. He
also sticks around the other old Laetacara..

The two old Laetacara have very little color, while the new ones have more color.

Could the two possibly be a pair?

I will try to get pics later

whered you pick em up? not sure on the pairs, but itd probably be a good idea to post some pix to find a definate sp. good luck with them!

My mom's camera sucks, but here.

First two crappy pics are of what I believe to be the dominant male (new Laetacara)
Third pics has one of the old Laetacara more towards the center and the other new one in the top left hand corner.
Last two pics are of one of the old Laetacara (the one the dominant male hangs out with)

The male is usually more brightly colored with extended dorsal and anal fins.

These fish will breed at a very young age. The pair should be conditioned on live foods and the male will then commence to clean a spawning site, flat rocks or a section of tank glass is the usual places. After a few days of spawning the eggs should hatch but the fry will not be free swimmers until 5-7 days later. The parents will share their duties of protecting the fry and sometimes will move them in their mouths around the tank. The fry should be fed newly hatched brine shrimp or crushed flake initially.
not mine, just some good info

Those are Laetacara dorisgera btw ... my experience with them is they do follow the fin length sexing fairly well. But I never had juvy's breed, only full sized mature adults.
