Lamprologus Caudopunctatus HELP!

i am getting a breeding pair of Lamprologus Caudopunctatus.

what is the smalllest size tank i could put them in so they will still breed and they wont kill eachother.

also sand? or calcium carbonate?
slate or white rock stacked?
flower pots?

2ftx18x18 or 1.5ftx1ftx1ft or 1.2ftby 1ft by 10"

sponge filters? or top filter?

The 2 X 18" X 18" should be fine.
Sand
A few shells and a couple of different caves(find out what they prefer)
Sponge filter will work, should use it once you have fry.
