Are there any issues or known problem to using lava rock from landscaping sources? I need very large rocks that i can find locally at fish stores and I was told to look at landscape dealers but I am unsure if that is safe or not.

They make good filter media as they are so porous. My only concern would be how rough they are. If you have the type of fish likely to rub on it it could cause injuries.

lava rock from a whole seller should be safe to use... wouldnt use it as substrates because of how rough or sharp it can be. but as bio media, yes.

lava rock is good, just make sure its natural colored and not dyed. but they clog very fast, which pretty much become big chunks of smooth pebbles

Yes... absolutely! A rock is a rock regardless of where you bought them...

I've gotten (literally) a few hundred piounds of rock over the years that I've used in aquariums.

I even know of a LFS that shops at the same landscaping yard as I do and then drastically increases the price to their customers.

PS - If a fish is stupid enough to hurt itself on a rock it was going to hurt itself anyway. Rocks are common enough in nature to trust our fish around them...

Thank you guys for your replies. That is exactly what i have been thinking as well.
