I can get some lava rocks for almost give away prices. He used it for landscaping. He has many large pieces. Was wondering, if this is safe for an aquarium? I know the LFS sells them for a lot of money but I am wondering if this is the same type.

I believe it is. I have heard of people using small landscaping lava rock chips for biological media in sump tanks for their aquarium. I know it is commonly used for ponds. Based on those facts, I assume the landscaping chips and the big decorative ones are the same.

Yes, it can be used a bio media. You can use it but realize it's sharp so fish can cut themselves on it-especially bottom dwellers and scaleless fish.

I researched this in the internet, and it said if the lava rocks are in an aquarium for a while, it will reduce nitrates which is good.
