How readily available in the states are laps? I have the opportunity to get one but I need to know how common they are before I pull the trigger. I am in Oregon if that helps at all

Not sure on how common they are, but get it anyway.
Laps are awesome Bichirs, that will give you so much pleasure to watch!

My other issue is that it is about eight inches and fat while the rest of my bichir stock is anywhere between 4" and 7". Do you think it will be ok?

If you have second thoughts you could just order from toyin some time

But as far as them being rare. The rarest i've seen in my LFS is a buettikoferi and there were only 2 ,4 inchers

Dr. B, if you don't mind me asking, how long have you been keeping fish? I'm just curious cause I have just recently seen you pop up all over the place in the poly section.

Laps are not rare at all (Koliba, Koloton and other sp can be tricky to get some times, but not rare) BUT a Polypterus collection is useless without Lapradei IMO.

Just get one, you will not be disappointed.

You should steer clear of cheap Indonesian captive breeds IMO, as they usually have bad genes from mass farming, and tend not to grow to full potential.
Wild is always the way to go!

Lapradeis are not rare at all. Maybe certain variant can be hard to obtain but not rare.

 So my collection is useless? I want a nigerian Lapradei but I can't find a good eating one. Most that I had barely eat.

No, I just think a Bichir collection isn't so without a Such an important species such as Lapradei.
You know I love you dinos Hao!
