ive had my lap for about 4 months and it still hides and is more reclusive than the other bichirs(8 from 6-18'') and i almost never see it eat so growth rate seems almost none existant. has anyone else experienced this? or is my lap just retarded?

The Lap I had once hid most of the time as well. I wouldn't be concerned. Just make sure he is getting food. Drop some in at night when the lights go off, and he will search for it.

i always feed just before lights out, i just worry that he doesn't get much food as i never see him eat and he is never plump like my other polys. i know that he is not starving to death, but i would like to see him eating and generally more active

Well, you could also try to target feed him by dropping food right in front of his face. That way, you could actually watch him eat while the lights are on if that will make you feel better. Take a pvc tube and drop the food through it to land right in front of him, that way the other fish might not get it first.

Laps just aren't an active fish, and you won't get him to change.

Also, just because he isn't plump, that doesn't mean he's unhealthy.
