A couple of questions ...

How fast did your Lap grow, and with what feeding schedule?

How often did your Lap swim around?

And finally, based on the activity level of these fish, what would you recommend as a minimum tank size, for life? (I really NEED minimum - my house is old, and I am uncertain how much weight the floors would be able to support)

mine is 14-16" its taken him awhile to get there but he also wasnt eatting well for awhile. now i have him on hakari massivor and hes doing great. as for activity he dont come out much in the day light. as for feeding he pretty much tells me LOL hes normally at the front of the tank when im getting ready for work in the morning i try to feed him 4-5 pellets 3-4 times week.......

mine has cost me alot in tank mates if he thinks somthing will fit in his mouth he will try and eat it even if you think it wont fit hell try

I used to have a group of 5 laps that were wild caught, I got them at 6" and it took them a year to hit 12"

I was feeding them mainly shrimp at first, then switched them to pellets.

Daily feeding, once per day, but twice on my days off.

i bought a wild lap at 12" and it took about 4 months to hit 13".
he didnt eat very aggressively though and never filled himself like the others.
i had a farmed lap, bought at about 2",grow to about 6" in maybe 3 months.

the big guy was not very active.
stayed at the same spot most of the time.
small guy was extremely active, always swimming around.

oh,and IMO if youre just keeping ONE lap with nothing else you can probably just keep them in a 3x2x2....
but of course who wants to see a single lap.
so bigger is better.

So, i'm hearing 1-2" every 4 months or so... I can deal with that.

As far as eating, i'm glad someone said theirs wasn't a very aggressive eater. Mine will eat, for sure, but it takes it longer to either recognize it's there, or become interested in it. I caught her eating some growth pellets yesterday along with the shrimp, so I am definately making progress with her.

dbcb, do not worry about it... lol... I will not keep her in the 55 for more than a year max (and even that sounds way too long, i know).

One of the options I was considering was getting a larger tank (one that is suited for life), and just not filling it all of the way (2/3 or so). It will cut back on the weight, which is a big issue where I live, and I will still gain the extra width/length it needs. With my math (don't get on me about it if it's flawed... I'm still exhausted) if I get the 4x2 120, and only fill it 2/3, it will only weigh around 700 pounds. It may not be as aestetically pleasing as a full tank, but this may be the only option I have.... Unless I talk to my landlord, and see what he thinks about reinforcing his floors with jack-posts from the basement...

I appreciate all of the replies. All of them have helped. :)
