Been working on getting my Armatus off of live feeders. he seems to like large Shiners as opposed to large goldfish. I originally tried the smealt in the dancing in the waterflow but to no avail. So I decided to feed him live Shiners, then try dead shiners. If I can get him eating dead shiners, next step would be smealts again. He charges the smealt but alaways pulls up short. Any other success stories other than starving him, which is not out of the question but I wan't to get him healthy and happy before I start witholding food from him.

for some reason my armatus dosnt like smelt.

i went from frozen goldfish, to shrimp. it prob helped with the shrimp having the same color as the goldies.

in your case, i would deff do what ur doing. go from dead shiners to smelt.

That makes perfict sence Trev. both beeing gold in color. but I know Arms. don't like the color silver and smelts are cheaper in price :) The only drawback are the smelt I buy at the store are for human consumsion and are gutted thus losing the benifits of the organs.

thats why i like the shrimp, i pack them with vitamins.

My Rhaph won't touch smelt.... Charges, quick sniff, smelt's ignored, shrimp's speared. Used to eat it. All my Armatus ate it, but I don't have any to show for it..... Unable to tell if that had anything to do with it.

Don't know if I'd trust gutted smelt as main staple. Maybe as part but not mainly as staple without supplementing.

I agree with you DB with supplementing his diet. If I can get him off live I'm going to try a variety of different foods including shrimp, krill, catfish nuggets, earthworms ect. There's a large fish market in Pittsburgh in the strip district, I might stop in the next time I'm in town and see what they have.
