Opinions on what type of tank is better just a discussion topic. Tanks with large aggressive cichlids or community tanks with discus and other peacefull fish??

I am setting up an 85 gallon and in the same dillema. What to do .. what to do? In a perfect world, why limit yourself to one or the other .. get both.

Larger more aggressive fish seem to have more character, where as discuss tend to just float there and look pretty. I have so many analogies for this to help explain but none are pg

im not in a dilema i was just bringing it up. but yea i prefer the big cichlids too i think they have much more character than the "peacefull types" of small fish

For me a big part of MFK is not making the choice, but having both types of tanks.

This is true, and I must agree with having both types of tanks. Why limit yourself to just one. WhenI get moved to my new house, many large monster tanks will be a major part of my decor. And that does not include what will be in the basement family room. This will be so much fun to do once I start. :D

I like saltwater had a 5.5g and a 10g but didnt have money to go big on it but i like the colors so for fresh im going with cichlids but breeding is a problem here they have new young every month, had a community was ok but wanted bigger fish. I also have a 2.5g fresh with little neon tetras in it.

I prefer salt now, but as for big agressive cichlids vs. discus both of which I have kept in the past both have their high points and low points.

Discus - real pretty, absalute stunners in a nice planted tank but they are not known for having much of a wet pet personality and they can be a labor intensive PITA.

big cichlids-tough as nails, easy to grow big and healthy with a python and 30min a week worth of care, great wet pets. But they usually need a good sized tank with few if any tank mates, and 99% of the time pretty plants will be turned into pretty play/chew thinggy's that clog your filter up.

Or you could just go salt......Live rock, sump with a wad of macro and a nice skimmer and your set...
