Large Growing Pikes

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
crenicichla sp. "venezuela" grows to be the biggest. info online suggest that they can reach 20" but i've yet to see one that large.

any of the lugubris pikes are a good choice. they would be:
johannas
lenticulatas
marmoratas
cinctas
xingu 1's aka orange pike

those are probably the more common ones that you can find.

I've got an African Tiger Pike and he is growing pretty quickly. LFS has two at about 10 inches, and they are some fat boys.

Obsession pretty much nailed it. As long as you stick to the Lugubris pikes you should be fine. Really, some of the Saxatilis pikes would work well as well, but you are probably going to have better results with the Lugubris pikes. :)

What is the availability there in Aussieland? I know of a few people that keep Crenicichla johanna there, but haven't seen much aside from that.

they are cool but not the same thing, not a pike cichlid. plus i've heard they max around 10-12" and don't live very long

I haven't seen any pikes as of yet, but hopfully i can track some down. Thanks for all that info, now i no what to be on the look out for.

Hate to bring a month old thread back to life but I keep a 14" Lenticulata with my wild caught Mono, Orinos, and Kelberi and he holds his own VERY well. In fact I would say he may be the alpha in that tank, and thats saying alot being in with two 12" Orinos.

Unfortunately, pike cichlids are on Oz's black list for aquarium fish ... so finding them will be very very difficult and very costly if caught.

what are some smaller pikes lol like 8ish inch

Some of it will be based on the temperment of the individual. I have two 12"+ Lents
that are getting bullied quite a bit by a 10" Male Zonatus. Had to put a divider up as he (Zonatus)
was becoming hyper dominant.
