My Texas cichlid has developed 2 spots on his face near the eyes, and one has gotten large and looks pink. It has opened up twice and lookes like a crater, then covers over again. Ive been using salt for about a month with 50% water changes avery 4 or 5 days. The large growth has lessened in size, but still looks ugly. The fish is healthy otherwise..good appetite, acts very aggressive towards his buddies. I cant find an example of this disease anywhere. Anyone have an idea what it is? Treatment ideas?

don't suppose you could post a picture? that would help a great deal

If your water is fine on the nitrate/ammonia/nitrite side of things, then i'm pretty confident your water is lacking minerals and is too hard, which would cause HITH (Hole in the head)

the same thing happend to my green terror, the pink growths would open and white slimy stuff would be excreted while he swam, it would get better everytime i did a water change and added salt, but then would get worse two days later. he ended up dieing on christmas :'(

sure sounds like HITH to me. The way you are treating it works great for HITH, but its going to be a struggle from now on. It seems like once they get it, it will keep returning the minute you get lazy with WC's and filter maintenance.

You seem like you are doing a good job trying to fix it and I've had a lot of luck getting fish back to healthly after a bout of HITH and live for many years afterwards. So don't give up!
