I am planning on getting a large lizard after I move but im not sure on what I want yet. All i know is that i want something thats at least handleable, not constantly but will allow itself to be picked up or roam for while without aggression (I know that there is always a chance it could bite or scratch and im ok with that) and sometimes stuff happens but you know what i mean. lets hear some suggestions and what size of a cage i would have to build for it. i would prefer something that grows 4' max.

right now im seriously considering a savannah monitor, they seem like a good option

:iagree: Good choice. I used to have one when I was younger. It got pretty big but they do make a good mess when they make poo.

most of the iguana species is going to work for you, you could also try a water dragon, they get very large but are fairly easy to tame...

i went to look at some water dragons cause thats what I originally was going to go with but when I bent down to look at them they just freaked out and launched into the glass, do they get less skittish as they get bigger? cause a water dragon is my first choice

i would stay away from the green iguana. It is a vegetarian which means it will need to eat basically every day and it will crap every day....which isn't that big of deal when it is small but a 6 footer will stink up the entire room. To keep it properly nourished you will end up making salads and spending a decent amount of money going to the supermarket to buy collard green, dandelion greens, etc....which rot in the fridge after a week and a half. They also need a massive cage when full grown. Few people are actually aware of the commitment it takes to rear a healthy green iguana to adulthood.
I would definitely go with a carnivorous lizard. They don't need to eat everyday...so less poop, the frozen rodents can be bought in bulk and stored for a very long time in the freezer and if you're going with the savannah monitor, which i think is a good choice, it won't require the cage size that the green iguana will eventually require.

everything is very flighty when it is small, even water dragons. mine is about 2 feet now and is very calm and is starting to let me handle him more and more.

I had a big male Water dragon for 11 years and he was awesome. THe colors get real nice and you can even keep females with them in the right size cage. Get a small one and work with it, being patient. As they mature you will need larger enclosures but you can do a real nice set up when they are still small. The great thing about Water Dragons is they stay on the smaller side but still look big. 2 feet to 30 inches. ( You will not be let down with one of these guys)

Water Iguana! maybe a 100-200 gallon tank with a turtle setup.
There is not such thing as a water iguana, marine iguanas from the Galapagos islands are unavailable to keepers and likely very hard to keep anyways.
