This may be a stupid question, but would it work if I put one 10" or 11" red belly in with a shoal of six 5" red bellies? Will he eat them or school with them?

I think a 10-11" red with a group of 8" reds would be okay, but 5" is bite sized. It may work, its just not the kinda chances I'd take. The size difference is just too great IMO.

8" adults are usually past their nipping phase, as along as you keep them fed and conditions are optimal this will likely work! Just watch for any injuries on the small guys and quarantine ASAP as the injured will get picked off immediately!
Also some good hiding spaces, plenty of tank space, dimmer lighting* and temps of 76°* or so may help as well.

Well I am trying it. I put the big one in today and so far so good. The big one looks even bigger than I thought he would. Believe it or not the first few hours the smaller ones were picking on the larger one. Once he really got up and started moving around they became afraid of him. Now they are schooling with him nervously. I hope this works out (fingers crossed).
Younger reds are more active, they calm down as they get older, glad to here its good so far, pics?

they're going to re-establish a pecking order. i would not be surprised if the smaller ones attempt to gang up and take it out. why only 1 big one? what size tank?
They have tried to several times already. At first they were nipping his fins before he really got acclimated, but ever since he got up they still have tried to gang up on him, but when he gives a swift turn around they all run from him, lol. I am hoping that they accept him after awhile. If not I may have to sell him or put him in another tank with others. I got just one because I got it off of someone from craigslist and it was a great price so I got him. The tank is a 110 gallon. I will be moving them to a 125g within the next few months.
Emphasis on "so far". I see what you mean, my younger ones are all over the place all the time and the bigger one just hangs out. I tried to add some small tetras, but judging by their disappearance I have concluded that they are still too young to live with other fish.
No pics due to my camera being lost. I hope I can find it soon because I would love to post a pic of it. I think either underestimated the size of the big piranha or overestimated the smaller piranhas. The big one appears to be at least 3 times the size of the small ones. It is hilarious when he tries to school with them. It is like a tractor trailer trying to blend in with motorcycles.
