Has anyone tried to build a large tank (1000g-1500g) out of sheetmetal??

my idea

all seams welded
entire tank coated with marine safe epoxy
tank crounded to earth
glass or acrylic viewing window

any experience or sugestions??

I can build a aircraft out of sheetmetal and keep it flying but i cannot put two pieces of wood together and make them stay together

How thick would the sheetmetal be?
All the sheetmetal I've seen is super thin and would just bow when you add water pressure.
I don't see why it wouldn't work as long as sealed with epoxy and it's reinforced enough not to bow under pressure.

.125 ( 1/8 in) not sure would have to reall research the thickness avaliabilty...was more woried about saltwater / corrosion factor

Yes it would work just fine. 1/8 in is more than thick enough for just about any practical size you want to do; you might need stiffeners however to eliminate deflections. What size are looking to build.

In addition to corrosion you might also consider that some fish are sensitive to conductive materials......... sharks for example

Thanks for reminding me...i forgot about the sensitivity sharks and conductive material....so sheetmetal is out...as the main thing was sharks and rays....

Still have to build the tank though(diffrent material) as i have two banded cat sharks now in a 175 bow they are about 13-14 inches so i got a day or two yet.

1000-1500 gals..... what dimensions were you looking to do, and where did you want to put it.

If you can manage to build planes i highly doubt that building a wood tank is beyond your skill level. If you know what size you want to build there is a large knowledge base here that can help you design it. thats the only tricky part really, buiding it is the easy part!

12 foot x 4 foot x 4 foot....iam turning my gradge into a family room and the tank will actualy be part of one wall.....no sump...it will be plumed to a 2000g ~ 3000G refuge in a heated greenhouse(heatedf in the winter...the green house will be an addition to the gradge just for the refuge.
