I'm in the early stages of planning one of my dream setups and I would like to get input from anybody interested to help me out.
Tank is ballpark between 1,200 to 1,600 gallons and I already know what fish I'm going to put into it.
The help I need as I have never had a tank this size is mostly the filtration and any extra maintenance I forgot.

So far I would like to keep it very simple with a large sump and an Ultima 4000 so far for Filtration. Pumps i was thinking two or three (as a fail safe) reeflo hammerheads or even tigersharks to help the return. Obviously something this size would unrealistic to do 40% to 50% water changes every week so I'd like to figure out an auto top off and that's as far as I have come thus far.

Tank plan is to have a large rear placed overflow box along the entire back side of the tank for optimal swim space.

Any suggestions would help after this point.

Hi, I would build a DIY large sump. Check out the king of diy and scuba Steve aquatics on YouTube for good examples. Ultima is good, but expensive. Stick with a diy sump.

Thanks for the input...

What sort of tank construction are you going with? How are you gonna heat it or do you need to? I suppose inline heaters on the return lines would make most sense here.

Im interested in your xl coast to coast overflow plans too. Are you gonna diy this or order it out?

This is going to be manufactured not diy.

I think you are on the right track with a large sump and an Ultima II 4,000. As far as Reeflo pumps, I don't think you can go wrong with them. My Hammerhead pump has been running for over 17 years now. The spare replacement pump is still in its box. I don't think you can buy Hammerhead pumps anymore. They are now Hammerhead/Barracuda hybrid pumps. I believe changing the impellers make them either a Barracuda or a Hammerhead (if my recollection is correct)

Most of the members on MFK now have smaller tanks, so there probably aren't many doing autodrip systems. Neoprodigy (founder and owner of MFK) did an article on his DIY 27/4 autodrip system. Perhaps his articles will have the info you are looking for:

Here's his second article:

Wishing you well on your big tank project.
