What type of filtration is best once you start getting to 900+ gallons. At some point it starts getting unrealistic to do a sump that is 30% volume of the tank. I could be wrong but I would think dead spots and water movement become the challenge unless your drop turnover to 1-2times and rely on power heads to get debris to the filter intakes.

I think that people that don't want to set up a sump for that size tank usually end up going with pool style sand filters. They can be backwashed, so maintenance and water changes are pretty easy.

There was a thread on her a while ago where a guy used three of these on his 1000gal tank.

I'm working on a roughly 1000 gal tank, have a ways to go until it sees water but I'm planning out filtration, I am doing a few things for filters. I have two 150 gal tubs for sumps, two 55 gal cans full of bio balls dripping into the sump, two large cartridge filters meant for pools and a large UV sterilizer. We'll see how well it works, if it isn't great I can always adjust.

Wow. That's a ton of filtration. I am trying to plan out for a future 600-750g tank for my aimara. He is going to be solitary so I don't see the point in going so overboard with filtration. Ultimately what I am trying to think through is how much space do you need for filter media versus space for overflow in case of power outage. I am guessing you always need a sump 30% of your display tank just for overflow.

Not sure on what your stock is but am I over simplfying it when when I think of doing a 180g sump with some filter socks and then just a ton of biomax/substratpro/etc for like a 720g tank?

I am going a bit over the top, yeah. But at the same time the sumps need to be pretty big. When the power cuts off the main display, even if it just drops an inch, will flow about 35 gallons into the sumps. In addition to the main display I'm going to have six 75 gal and a 125 gal attached to the sumps, so I will have a lot of water to filter.

You dont always need 30%, in some situations that will be overkill. So long as your sump holds all the excess water when the pump is shut off you'll be ok. But I think your plan will be good.

nobody said you cant use a 720gal baffleless sump for 1000g main tank. if i have a 1000g tank, i would filter it with a 500-1000g pond in a greenhouse.

Honestly you would be fine with a medium size sump with enough mech and bio filteration since all you will be keeping in the aimara. You could also look into a drip system and just make it maintenance free

Yup. Did you get a chance to measure the height on your 600?
