I have a 225 gallon fish tank with quite a few central american cichlids in it.
i have a large eheim canister filter and a large powehead.
in the ehemi filter is foam, charcoal, bioballs, and whatever else comes with the filter.

i try to do water changes every 7-10 days (large onece, 70% at a time)

i cleaned it out 5 days ago and i already notice that it smells very fishy and its not nice tohave in the house in the dining room.

can i do anything to get rid of this disguisting fish smell? i do need to get a UV steralizer to keep the water from going "green" looking.

any help plz

thanks

more filters and carbon. 2x more filters for 1 tank.

you could set up a U.V but i would change your activated carbon or charcoal

Upping the filtation would help to i would add another canister and a power filter ( the kind that hang on the back )

More carbon will help, and you may need to replace or reactivate the carbon you have currently. The smell is the natural result of the breakdown of the organic matter you add to the tank and the fish poop. You can reduce the smell by feeding less and/or reducing the bioload. It may also help to do more frequent smaller water changes accompanied by good gravel vacs each time.

A UV sterilizer will reduce the "green" look in the water if the green look is caused by free floating algae. I recommend a UV sterilizer even if you do not have an algae problem, they do lots of good things for the aquarium.

Try replacing the carbon in your canister filter, if that doesn't work you may need more filtration. Another canister would be a good investment for the future. How big are your cichlids and how many gallons is your eheim rated for?

I would recommend a second filter for Mechanical, I would add a fluval FX5. That should help with the smell since it will collect the waste.

last time i got a smell like your describing i had a dead fish trapped in some decor. check for missing fish.
