Hi! I have a 75 gallon tank that is just about done cycling, and I really can't decide on what fish to get. I was thinking a large cichlid like a severum with rainbowfish, but I would like to get other ideas as well. I REALLY love animals and don't think I could stand having my fish be killed off by another fish, especially since I would blame myself for putting incompatible fish together. I would like a large, peaceful and "friendly" fish ("friendly" meaning that it may eventually recognize me), but not too large for a 75 gallon. If cichlids are my best bet, then exactly what kind would you say? I also would really love to have a fairly small schooling fish, or even medium sized ones (which is why I chose rainbows). Personal experiences would really be great!
Sorry for asking such a complicated question!
Thank you

uaru A. get fairly large at 10"+. you could probably get away with 2 in a 75 maximum. however, one as a wet pet would be great if it were larger, 4"+, but juvenile uaru need to be kept in at least two's as they are very shy when young.

i have had filament barbs as dithers before and they are amazing as decent shoal. always active and always shiny. they have a bit of colour to them but the winning bit is the males trailers on the dorsal as they mature. makes them stunning. always outnumber the males by 3:1 or even more females per male as they are like male guppies in their harrassment.

Thank you! I was considering uarus but did not have much info on them. I'll go research them right now! Also, I have never seen one at my LFS... any ideas where I could find one?

"chocolate cichlid" or Mesonaura festivus ( the first will grow bigger ) both very peaceful

The difficulty is, the really "responsive" cichlids tend to be at least moderately aggressive. I have kept uaru, chocolates, and many severums and I wouldn't consider them in the same class as true "wet pet" type fish. Not in the same way as, say, oscars, red devil, midas, trimac, things like that.

You could do a severum as a centerpiece with a group of pretty much any schooling fish (I doubt a severum would consider eating anything larger than a neon). I'd also add a school of cory cats. Alternately if you don't mind going with something a bit mroe aggressive, a jack dempsey (either a blue or a normal one) makes a nice centerpiece type fish. I'd be surprised if they'd bother with anything like a grown rainbowfish, I've kept them with giant danios and they completely ignored them.

Geo's are extremely mellow and full of personality. VERY cool fish...check 'em out.
