hi everyone i am new to this site, but i have kept a tropical 10 gallon fish tank for five years and i recently converted to a native tank with creek chubs in it. I am getting into native fish and i am thinking of putting one largemouth bass (preferably a male because they r smaller. (not quite sure how to tell gender though, help with that would be appreciated) and maybe some other smaller sunfish. There is a stream in my backyard where i can get an unlimited supply of creek chubs for the bass's food. The chubs go from 1 inch to 1 foot; ill up the food size as the bass grows. I am planning on a 150-180 gallon tank which should be fine at room temp. Any advice on tank size, filtration, companions, how to tell a fishes gender, and anything else is greatly appreciated.

Bigger tank; 180 is too small. As for companions, just make sure they dont fit in the Bass's mouth. You'll need a lot of filtration; Bass constantly eat and crap. They'll also appreciate some current and lots of water changes. Good luck; they're a lot of work, but lots of fun.

Be carefull. Bass are pretty aggressive in my experience. They will be fine for a while then just kill what they cant eat. The only success I have had is to keep them alone. Easy to train on prepared foods like shrimp or thawed fish chunks. That way no parasites.

the bass won't mess with the catfish. actually if bass is small enough the catfish might go after him at night.

Iv'e kept a couple at different times in my 220. They are awesome but they get really territorial and will definitely eat whatever fish they fit in their mouths. They also poop all day and will challenge your ability to maintain a clean looking tank. To be honest though I would go with a smallmouth, they swim the whole time and eat/act much more uptempo. Generally they are just much more fun to watch. But they are equally aggressive to other fish. Good luck.

Thanks. Do smallmouth get as big as lmb, and does their being more active make mean they need a larger tank? Also, i may b able to get a 220, so is that big enough for your past lmb or did they outgrow it?
