I have 4x juvenile Cons in a 30H (same dimensions as 20H but taller) that are breeding and a full grown male Con in a 10 gallon by himself. I also have 2x 1" JDs, a 1" Severum, and a new 1" GT in a 20H. I'm planning on growing out all of the fish in the 20H to a decent size before mixing them in with the male Con...Did I mention I'm looking for a big tank? I'm going to try to shoot for a 150 gallon minimum in the near future (hopefully by the end of August or so).
Regarding the fish I have so far, will these all be okay in a 150? I worry about the Cons but I know they can hold their own...What about the 2 JDs? I'd love the add a couple more Severums but for now I have nothing...any input anyone? Will a 150 be enough or shall I go bigger?
Here's what else interests me: Texans, Firemouths, and maybe a school of Silver Dollars to mix things up. I'm not going to buy anymore fish until I get a tank big enough to hold what I already have.
Thanks

From my perspective, the fish you've got would work in a 150, except maybe the severum. I've never kept them and have always seen them kept by themselves when full grown. I think that they fight with one another and are too passive for the general cichlid population (I could be wrong). Also if you are wanting more fish. I don't know. Firemouths have always seemed like weaklings to me also. If you are going to want to keep adding and adding fish (such as the Texan) well, you need a bigger tank. I've got a 225 I am currently working on setting up. As it stands I have a baby flowerhorn (1.5") and a Jag (1") that will one day reside in it. I plan on having maybe 4 central american cichids, 2 Oscars and 2 catfish (the footlong range variety) in that tank. I've decided on 8 fish total for a 225. I've also been warned that I have to pay special attention with aggression and be prepared to move some guys. One thing I might warn you about, I've had cons before. They aren't too bad tempermentally by themselves or all males or all females, but with 5 convicts, you are bound, DESTINED, to have at least one breeding pair. When those guys pair up and breed, they can become down right nasty! Cons are the only fish that I've kept that Have ever bitten me (I've kept a variety of ca cichlids over the years and also saltwater triggerfish). I've had other fish that are aggressive with other fish, Red Devils come to mind, but cons can just get NASTY! They are interesting fish, but If you are going to keep more than one, your most likely going to have a breeding pair. And that is going to be trouble for your other fish and you when you clean the tank. But that's just my opinion.

Ok thanks for the responses everyone. Like I said, I'm only in the planning stages...I still haven't found a decent sized tank yet, so I feel I have some time before I start seeing some problems.

As far as Convict aggression goes, I have at least a breeding pair in my 30H and they "seem" to all get along fine (for now). My lone full grown Con in the 10 was given to me by someone else--this guy spits gravel at me and hides under a piece of driftwood all day. He has an attitude problem, which I love.

sounds fine to me too all the fish mentioned are in the small to middle size range and similarly aggressive. As stated before just make sure the severum can hold its own
