Try a Warmouth or Green Sunfish, maybe you could try a Grass Pickerel.
You would not want anything that gets big. I would stick to Sunfish or Darters for a tank that size.
I have two Grass Pickerel in a almost square 20 gallen tank right now. But I plan to move them to a bigger tank after they grow some.

I am afraid none of those except darters and smaller sunfish would work in a 20g long.

I agree with guppy...well, sort of. I think the size should be a bit smaller. An inactive fish that reaches 6-7".
