in the early days gator gars could reach12 to15 feet and up to 330 lbs

there is anecdotal evidence of them reaching the lower end of that range, but nothing has been actually proven with hard evidence (photos, actual measurements, etc).

the largest is generally accepted to be about 10' in length...which is still quite large to say the least!--

largest i have seen in person would be the belle isle specimen, "hal", that richard/polypterus used to work with quite closely. that fish was somewhere between 6.5-7'...although perhaps richard has a more exact measurement. definitely a very large fish, and thick too. i have some video of it feeding, will have to see if i can dig that up. i've been meaning to updated primitivefish.com with it, but there have been some recent software issues.

most gator gars in public aquariums seem to be around that size range for the really big individuals, shedd aquarium has one that is maybe 3.5'-4' long, and georgia aquarium has several that are around 3-4' as well.--
