HOW BIG THEY GET?
The biggest ones that I have seen were well over 16 inches. Others here have more experience with them than I do, though. Maybe they will chime in for you.

Debateable, Crenicichla vittata, Crenicichla cincta and Crenicichla tigrina are reported to be pretty large in the wild. Crenicichla marmorata and Crenicichla lenticulata have impressive size as well.

Crenicichla sp. 'venezuela' is reported to be the largest, possibly attaining 24", but thats never really been documented in captivity, and not sure if its been confirmed in the wild either.

When I was speaking with Oliver Lucanus at the 2007 ACA convention in Sacramento he told me of a 'at least' a 24" Vittata seen while diving.

We had a 16" venezuela male and I think someone had a 16" male cincta.
