So I let my small cousins have a 10g as a gift and I set it up for them and it was established at my place for over a year before I moved it to theirs. Using all the same equipment I used on it. They have 3 cory cats and a few mollies, I believe 3 to be exact. But they over fed one day and the tank gave off a horrible smell so they asked me to come over for help. After a few weeks of frequent water changes and testing the water quality was much better ammonia gave a 0 reading nitrites were undetected as well and nitrates were ~40ppm. I told them to keep changing water to get those numbers down to about 20 and their mom did continue with changes. But I had noticed a few green very small gnat like flies sitting on the filter and on top of the water. I have never seen anything like that before so I blew it off. But now they are calling again and the water is very cloudy with these small white particles that collect on the plants and glass and are free floating as well. They are EVERYWHERE. Even water changes don't seem to dilute them. The fish seem healthy and all eat and water quality is actually very good now! But I'm just wondering if this will cause a problem at all and what the heck it is? Someone help me out here lol I'd hate to have to drain the tank I gave them especially after a year of keeping it myself! Thanks in advance!

I have had this before.Just keep scrubbing the sides so they fall of, keep the tank as clean possible, and take out ANY plant mater (temporary, don't get rid of them), you can also rise the temp a few degrees.

Not planaria.

Maybe springtails?

my guess would be planaria as well. i would suggest cleaning the filter thoroughly along with some water changes along the way. The filter will eventually filter in all those planaria. when its cleared up, clean the filter again. Goodluck! My aro tank gets planaria infested from time to time and it works for me every time.

do they look like this?

these are aquatic springtails (I forget the exact species) and they won't hurt anything. I first noticed mine in the tropical tank about two years ago and they haven't taken over, nor disappeared. just one more thing I get to keep in my tank, and I didn't have to pay for them.
