IN YOUR HEAD
i got an angel and a sailfin tang for free. the angel appears to be missing scales all along the lateral line on both sides. the sailfin tang has a few raw spots on both sides of the fish on the lateral line.

my questions are is this lateral line erosion or is it something else?

will they get over it and regrow their scales?

Sounds like HLLE like you are saying. They will get over it in time given good water quality and a quality diet. Soak some of the food you use in a vitamin supplement like Selcon to help. If it is pretty bad they will probably have scars that don't go away.

all right thanks. i am giving them a mix of foods. including hikari food sticks, hikari cichlid pellets with sprilina, shrimp, squid, blood worms, algae from around the tank and some new life spectrum pellets.

the sailfin has one spot on each side and the top of its fin is gone. the spots are not big, maybe .25-.5 the size of the eye on the 4-5" fish.

the angel has it bad. from the top of the back down past the lateral line by about half the total distance from the line to the top of the back. it also runs down to its face and gill plate. i will try to get a pic of it to help with the problems id.

i also am not sure what type of angel it is but it is about 5"

the angel looks like it is a Apolemichthys xanthurus but i am not 100%. though i am 98% sure.

is there any medication i should get?

i don't have any inverts in this tank it is just a fish only tank.

the stock is
piccasso trigger
clownfish
blue damsel
lunar wrasse
spotted grouper
scooter blenny
sailfin
the angel(possibly Apolemichthys xanthurus)

I'm not sure about the angel but get the tang nori. Just buy it from the makert unsalted. They need more veggie matter than meat such as blood worms

they get the blood worms on occation. i feed them to my african arowana and some to my triggerfish, wrasse and scooted blenny. they just happen to eat them also. i know they are the cows of the sea. i have seen this tang go only a max of 5" in the tank without grazing. i will go down to the asian market today and pick some up along with some more squid and shrimp.

was there any meds i should get though? or will they just get over it. also can it spread?

HLLE usually starts out as HITH (hole in the head) small pits/open wounds on the face - cause poor diet and very bad water conditions high in C02. Does it spread like a Virus - no. Cure good water parameters, O2, no stress, and good diet. However when it gets so bad the lateral line looks/gets depressed or sunken the damage is done. The fish will never recover, probably never grow one more inch the rest of it's shortened lifespan. At this piont your basically Hospice, giving the best possible life to a terminal fish. At the very least the pits/open wounds on the face should be scarred and highly visible - actualy quite unmistakable.

However - some of the most common causes of "Raw Spots" or scale lose come from Chlorine, Ammonia, and over exposure to Meds.

there is not hith present. just a look of a scleless fish. the latural line is not pitted. just all the scales are gone and the sink looks rough, like when you scale a sunfish with a spoon. thats on the angel. the tank has the raw spots on the latural line. the faces and gills are fine as far as holes go. just some rough parts and frayed soft section of the gill plate. i will try to get some pics. i just don't have a good camera right now and they don't stop.

usually HLLE doesn't heal. The best you can really do is stop it unless it is extremely minor. Just keep the water up and feed highly nutritious foods without too much protein. I feed my tang NLS thera A, red and green seaweed, and formula 2 frozen. He has never shown any signs of HLLE.
