Lava rock contains trace metals (correct???), it being volcanic or metal making byproduct. Anyone know if it would be safe in a shark filtration system?f

The trace elements would be varied, but I wouldn't be overly concerned, since the concentrations are not likely more than your standard live rock. My greater concern would be that lava rock is typically sharper than rock/coral - but you say filtration, so I imagine your putting it in your waste basket? BTW - check out oceanproaquatics.com - they have 200# of Hawaiian base live rock for $325 SHIPPED! I just bought 400#.

i have used Lava rock with no problems and I also read an article explaining that they absorb nitrates and I can atest to that as my tanks never went over 10-15 ppm (nitrates)
