I have used it some, in the past. Amatitlania cutteri spawning in a lava rock cave above

I mostly use it now as biological filter media, it has lots of surface area for beneficial bacteria to live on.

Because it is light weight, I find debris collects under it, so when vacuuming, the rock needs to be lifted and vacuumed under.
And for filter media pre filtering debris is needed to keep it from getting gunked up, negating all those crevices used by aerobic beneficial bacteria.

The problem I had with lava rock substrate,, is large interstitial spaces/crevices between them, which allow detritus to fall between the cracks, become hard to vac out, and can rot and deteriorate water quality (I had the same problem with pea gravel).
Once the spaces become clogged...... anoxic, or even anaerobic conditions become possible

Not a monster tank by any means……my 46 acrylic bow front with red holey carved lave rock. It’s sitting on crushed Aragonite……

I had a few pieces spread around the tank back when I was keeping African cichlids. They made for a nice colorful contrast with the crushed coral substrate.
