I have a lot of lava rocks outside, and was wondering if it is safe to use for media in my FX5. I have used them and still am in one of my HOB filter that is currently setup in my 29 gallon. The parameters of the 29 is perfect, with nitrate in the low 10-15ppm.

I was also wondering if I can fill the 2 bottom tray of my FX5 with lava rocks, and the top tray with half Fluval Biomax Ceremic Rings and half with filter fiber.
Here is another question, is Biomax better than Lava rocks?

Thanks!

Anyone?

Lava rocks have very little surface area. You'd be better of going with scrubbies which really are poor bio media for canisters

Check this link for the lava rock and scrubbies surface area comparison http://www.wernersponds.com/biofiltermedia.htm

Lava rock would look great in the tank! Adds some extra filtration and a place to anchor live plants too.

Thanks all! I just bought and filled up my FX5 with:

Bottom layer filled with Fluval Biomax Ceremic Rings.
Second layer filled with some Fluval Biomax Ceremic Rings and Eheim ProSubstrate. Not completely filled so I have buy another pack tomorrow to fill it.
Top layer is filled with Filter Fiber.

How is this for bio media? Do you guys think it will be enough for a pair of rays and 2 or 3 silver arowanas? Tank is 180 BTW.

good choice in media
