I've decided I have a lazy male...
I had a male and two female motoros in a 180g. When my large female was around my male he would bite at the back of her disc and feet but i never got babies. I just got a new 360g set up (6x4x2) and I figured now that there is more room he is really going to be happy and get the job done. However i have seen the problem. He is only interested in her when SHE comes over to HIM. if her ass just so happens to fall in front of him he will nibble on her and they will go in circles for a while until she swims away. He will not chase after her. hmph. My two females swim all around the tank all day, my male does not really move that much in comparison....

Anyone else have a lazy ray or advice on how to kick his butt into gear?

He is pretty fat, so maybe he is just TOO fat and happy. should I slow down on feeding a little bit I only feed once a day?

I've never tried a male pup before so I'm not sure but even a male around 1 year should work, it won't need to be mature but close is better. Big waterchanges over 50% dropping the temp at least 6 degrees F usually allways perked the male up right after

Let them settle into the new tank.. dont feed less, or mess with the temp... let them do their own thing.. when he's ready, he'll do it.. maybe she's not mature, who knows.. give it some time.. they're not guppies or conviicts... you dont "trigger" rays to mate.....

Actually you can trigger your male to mate. The waterchange method will only work with a interested male and will seem to perk it's interest. For a male that's not interested at all the introduction of a new male can sometimes get the original male to start breeding. The other thing to try is to seperate the male and female into different tanks and then re-intoduce them after a few months. Males seem to be more aggresive after re-intoducing them into a tank with mature females.

I did a big water change with colder water. Immediately as I was filling the tank he became more active and slowly followed the female around nipping at her a little bit. He was a little more interested but he just wont "swim" after her. If she stays on the bottom he will follow her but if she swims away he gives up. In the old tank while he was nipping at her she did get him with her stinger once on the underside of his disc. It healed up pretty quickly but could it have deterred him from getting aggressive with her now?

Good luck, sounds like it's getting closer to breeding time.
