In search of Leiarius
I'am on the fence about putting oak tree leaves on top of my black aquarium sand/small gravel, to make a nice natural hide for bottom dwellers.

Besides the way it would look, I wouldn't mind, how would it negatively impact my 45 gallon tank.

I would weekly move around the leaves and monthly mix around the sand.
thinking of a layer that is 1/2 to 1 inch deep.

Thanks for the INPUT

A 1" deep layer of dead vegetation left to rot in the bottom of your tank? You wouldn't dump an inch of fish food, or let fish poop pile up until it was an inch thick, would you? Doesn't sound like a good idea to me.

cramshaft who are they i need to see their photos of their setup and what they do to maintain the look, you just gave me the hook but no worm com on man.

Also this is a great time for me to collect leaves, got six 60-80 year california black oaks surrounding the house so as a bonus this look would be free.

My wife has quite a few tanks with leaves / "dead vegetation resting above the substrate. I think it has a nice look, gives the inhabitants a few more options for cover / privacy, makes the water look a little more natural and overall is just pretty neat. I know that some leaves are more desirable than others -oak,almond - as they do something to water parameters (ph ?), she has asked me to collect the oak leaves from our yard before, and has a huge bag of almond leaves in the fish room. Do your homework and go for it!

my only concern would be if they would cause ammonia and nitrate spikes initially. if you monitor this, i would go for it

iam convinced tommorrow iam doing the underwater leaf litter.

Thanks everyone for easing my concerns.

Tommorrow evening Ill post pics that will hopefully be good shots.
