Leaf Litter

While snorkeling in cenotes in Mexico, I noticed large sections on the substrate covered in leaf litter. So soaked some magnolia leaves for a couple weeks, then added them to a couple tanks.

In a 50 gal betta tank

and below in a 150 gal beani tank

Cute. They make a terrible mess, though. I just save the leaves for breeding. Looks amazing. Maple and alder work, too.

Another thing you can do if you like the look is go to a craft store and buy the strings of leaves, detach them, and adhere a stone to the bottom of it so it sinks. No mess!

Leaf litter on bottom of streams and lakes is natural. But in a tank it can get very toxic and overload your biological system as the leafs decay. If you just want the look maybe you can find some fake leafs made of silk or plastic.
