leafs as substrate???

Hey guys quick question I was looking through some photos a couple days ago and saw that someone had leafs on the bottom as a substrate and was wondering how to go about this? Just kinda wondering actually lol but I cant find the pic dont remember what forum it was in and I think they were maple leafs...

they were probably fake, real leaves would slowly rot on the bottom of a tank
