I came across a free 20 and 25g tank last week. These tanks are from the early 70's and I don't know how far I can trust them. I resealed them 3 days ago and now I'm leak testing them outside. So far so good. They've been holding water for about half an hour now. How long should I test them for?

I just bought a new 120 that I have been leaking testing today. Been putting in about 2" of water in on the hour and checking for leaks in between. Just got the whole tank filled and now am going to let it go over night before putting in "good" water.

2" per hour? You must be testing indoors? I just filled them right up and hoped for the best.;)

I'd go for 12 hours anyway. 24 is better in my opinion, but 12 will tell 90% of the time.

I would wait a few days. There was just a thread recently where a tank lasted two weeks then started gushing water out of the side seams.

I waited 3 days when I first got my 55 from craigslist. On the third morning it started gushing out of the side. I resealed it waited the 24 hours for the silicone to harden then waited 4 days for any leaks. I would wait a min of 3 days at least just in case.

I had a 40 tall with fish in it going good for about 3 months .. poof came home and 30 gal on the floor in my 3rd floor apt. thank god it leaked into my kitchen so it didnt do damage .. seemed to be no reason for the leak but the tank was 30 years old

I moved them inside after 7 hours of holding water, but after reading some of the things you guys wrote I wish I had tested it for longer. Now I'm a little paranoid.

Well here they are in all their glory:

The top will be a convict breeder tank and the bottom will be a fry raiser/hospital tank.

*fyi those are bubbles not scratches*;)
