I have a very old 75 gallon that has sprung a leak about 6" from the top of my tank in the back corner (of course). Has anyone ever re-sealed their tank, and if so, were you successful and what does it involve?

At this point it is because I still have a 7" synspillum in it, and no place to put it. So far it doesn't appear to be leaking any further, but I'm sure it will get worse soon.

I know that there are many threads and subjects, but was trying to have more of a conversation with people, instead of lurking or just reading about someone else's experience.

Ive resealed lots of tanks. You have to take the water out.and scrape out all the old silicone.Having the glass perfectly clean is the key.there are lots of threads on silicone and resealing search around a bit,be sure your silicone will be safe for your fish.

Thanks for the tips! Do you have any suggestions for what tool to remove the silicone? I was thinking a razorblade. Would that do a good enough job?

if you were ghetto like me.....you would just slap this on the outside of the tank and be done.

edit: i say this because resealing a tank is not as easy as it sounds.....

If you go by what alot of people say, new silicone does not stick to old silicone. this means that in order to reseal the tank, you have to dissembly it completely, seeing as how the silicone is a continous seal everywhere. Having said that, this may be a solution.....

LOL, Billy Mays is hilarious. I am not too crazy about disassembling the entire tank. I really don't care how nice it looks because the tank is on the bottom of an iron stand that can hold two tanks. No one can see back there anyways. I'll have to give it some thought. Nice diagram by the way.

I used GE I
Make sure the sealer you get doesnt have treatment for stuff such as mold, mildew, which could poison the fish.
I just took a razorblade to the old stuff to get it off, cleaned it, and then resealed it and it worked fine.
If you want it to look nice, which you said in this case doesnt really matter, you tape off around it, to get a seal that looks like the manufacturers.
You can also get sealer in clear, black, or white.
