Hi guys, im looking after a leapard gecko for my bro. When he bought it, it seemed healthy and fat, its tail was chunky and juicy looking. As he is a wagon driver and aint home much he had his nephew looking after it, after 3 weeks away he arrived home to find it had lost alot of wieght and his tail was very skinny. I have took it on board to try and get this cecko back to his origional fitness. At the minute he is eating wax worms (hand fed) he will not hunt for himself at all. The problem we have is it doesnt seem to be digesting the food properly. My understanding of a gecko is the food it consumes goes into its tail before it digests the food, is this true??
He has been here a week now and doesnt seem to have put any wieght on at all, he does eat atleast 4-6 wax worms every 3-4 days, is this enough for him?? should he be eating more???
The viv temp during the day is 30c and at night goes as low as 26c is this ok??
He has a hide and plenty of trees in there to hide in with also, i have calcium powder in with him every night, the substrate is half desert sand and half finely chopped wood chippings. There is a heat pad under his hide on the outside of the viv which is half 'n' half in the hide.
What am i doing wrong if anything?? is there anything i can do to make the cecko eat/hunt by himself. He hasnt shed any skin whilst ive had him but does look a bit white. Is he ready to shed?? should i spray him or provide moisture in his viv to help him along with the shedding???
