Hey guys pickin up my new gecko tomorrow, got him in a 10g tank with a undertank heater, just wondering if i need a heat lamp some things i have seen on other websites is yes and no, just unsure if i should have on or not, I have also heard i just choose tile possibly as substrate, can anyone link me to some tile they recommend, also any pointers or tips would be great this is my first reptile need all the help i can get.

You'll only need additional heating if the UTH does not get the warm side of the tank to the proper temp. I would recommend picking up a digital heat probe to you can get accurate readings. As for tile, you can purchase it from Lowe's/Home Depot. Just buy the the ceramic 12"x12" tile. It works great.

great thanks alot appreciate it, what is UTH? Also this digital heat prob tried to find one but did not rly know what i was looking for, a link would be nice please

The most common problem ive seen with uth's is overheating, if thats a problem, a rheostat or thermostat will fix your problem. The only time I had issues with to little heat was with a mini uth.

Well i bought a uth at petsmart some 20$ one seemed decent there is no temp control on it, wondering what it will get up to and do i leave the uth running all day? also still have no bought my gecko, when i was into the fish hobby i said i would never buy fish from petsmart or any place like that, should i do the same for geckos or are they cared for good at places like that...

Edit: Vicious you still selling geckos

Once you put a ceramic tile over top of the UTH the temperature is usually around 85-90 F.

I personally don't like to buy reptiles from chain stores because they're not always the healthiest, especially leopard geckos. They usually come in dehydrated and very thin. If you do decided to buy one from Petsmart/Petco, etc....just make sure it's healthy, eating, hydrated and has good weight.

At the moment I don't have any Leopard geckos available but I am incubating some eggs that should hatch with in the next few weeks.

I use reptile carpet, with a layer of paper towel over it. I however use a rheostat. Tile is a good choice, but try not to use stone tile. I read that it transfers heat to weel and cause trouble with keeping a heat gradient.

You should get rid of that reptile carpet. That stuff is a breeding ground for bacteria. Not to mention it contains fibers that can tear the toe nails out of your gecko's toes if they happen to get tangled.

Stone tile works fine. If it gets too hot all you do is add another tile piece on top of it to help distribute the heat more. But if you have a rheostat it helps to avoid this problem all together.
