Whats up MFK family? I recently purchased an acoustic guitar and was looking for good places to start to learn about it. I been searching youtube when I have time but wanted to touch base with others who play to find out if you have any suggestions on where to begin or what would be a good book/author to read up on the topic. I do plan to take some lessons, but my money will not allow me to do this on a regular basis so the more I can learn without lessons would be a big positive. I dont want to take food out the mouths of my fishies or my family to do this. :) I purchased a Cort dreadnaught with solid wood top and satin finish and it has a real nice sound. My music interests include R&B, funk, reggae, jazz and neo-soul. All good info on the topic is appreciated as I am a beginner. Thanks.

well.. do you want to play music, or learn songs?

there is a difference.

don't mean to steal your thread, but I'm in a similar situation. I used to play piano and used to know how to read sheet music, but that was a long time ago. I'm interested in this also

the hal leonard books are good . especially for beginners . it should come with a cd . go through a couple levels of those to learn the basics . also youtube has lots of free beginner lessons .

I want to learn songs to start out. I have been picking at the strings for the past week and trying to get a feel for comfort and basically exercise my fingers. Eventually I would like to learn to read music tho. I found a website called www.chordie.com that has some of what I am looking for. I'm still open to suggestions if you guys have any at all.

Suggestions? Do what I did. Never take off the guitar. Sling it back to do chores, then play it between activities. Take it to the grocery store, school, everywhere. Play in bed as you fall asleep. Live it. After two years of practice and study, you will probably professional grade or close to it.

Just lots of practice. Find like 2-3 simple songs that you can play. Practice them throughout the day. it really helps to listen to the songs on an ipod or mp3. There are plenty of informational movies and videos out there. But beware of youtube, there are lots of people that make their own versions. Also, don't even listen to expert village they are total dumbasses. Lots of practice. I did at least an hour a day every day for like a year and got really good until fish came into my life lmao
