My convict eggs successfully hatched for the 1st time today and the pair is on a community tank with 4 other convicts. I would like to know if it is necessary to leave the lights on for the parents to fend of the fry from other convicts or it is ok for me to turn it off at nights.

I had the same worry the first time my convicts bred! But yes; It's okay to turn the lights off.
Even with the lights off the parents will still guard the fry. (They even take turns sleeping.) If they feel their' current location in the tank is unsafe, they'll move the fry to a new location.
But if you still feel unsure you can just take the fry out & put them in a nursery tank or put in a tank divider.

Thanks for the replies. I just put in a divider in the tank to separate the pair from others and they also moved the fry from the pvc pipe into a cave like pirate ship decoration :)

OK, but no divider was necessary, the fry will be fine.

My only advise: Get on craigslist and start buying tanks... if you want to save the fry... I'm just saying... :)
