In the UK TMC Aquarays are a huge thing at the moment. Huge light output, minimal useage and a ten yr life span. seen loads of marine set ups with them, not so many freshwater ones though.

Should work fine for fish, but not gonna work for a planted tank. The plant-friendly LED fixtures are priiiceeeeyyyy.

Interesting... I was wondering how they would fare for plants. I was really interested in the life span of the lights, they seem cost effective. Was looking into something for my African tank to brighten it up, but lighting fixtures are not cheap in general I find.

With regards to planted tanks...... Does anyone know the scientific reason for this? I have seen many marine corals, LPS SPS SOFTIES the lot, do well under led ighting fixtures? Admittedly most do better under halide but ur talking opposite ends of the lighting scale.

Any thoughts?

ive been reading about using the LED lights for aquaponics, and not many people seem to be pleased with them. something about unless you spend ALOT of money on a lighting system, they just cant put out enough light.

if your looking for just light to make things look good, their most likely great. but if your looking to actually have a planted tank, your better off with conventional lighting.

LED lighting will be the future. for plants and corals, it's still VERY expensive. my LFS has some awesome LED fixtures that can grow anything, but theyll run you about $2k. a 4ft LED light tube is about $200-300
