I've recently began another attempt at a planted tank and I've been thinking about switching from fluorescent to led lights or just adding some LEDs. I've been looking at grow light panels on eBay and was hoping for some opinions on these and also what combination of colors/spectrum would be best? Thanks for any help in advance!

20130726_211234.jpgThe "panels" are not very bright or very good quality. I bought one to test and it was junk and after a month I bet I lost 30 leds due to the humidity. If you are trying leds for a planted tank, spend the extra money on quality planted aquarium specific led. I bought a kessil a150w 6700k "amazon sun" and LOVE IT. At 225 it is a bit pricy but running 32w and a super long life will pay for itsself and looks amazing. Havent planted my tank yet but tested the light on growing emersed HC and anubias it was working better than ive ever seen and the growth was excellent. Pic is of one over my 36x18x20" 57 rimless.

Well...darn! Thanks for the info, kind of upsetting to hear though. Trying to figure out something MUCH less expensive though. Budget is very tight these days with a second baby on the way. Any other suggestions?

Dimensions are the same as a standard 55gallon except it is 6ft long. Unfortunately I don't remember any of the specific names of the plants but the guy at the LFS set me up with some stuff that apparently easy growing and low requirements. A few types of grasses and ferns I believe and I already had some amazon swords I think and a clump of anubias. I'll post a pic.

if you're on a tight budget. have u looked into the flood led lights on ebay? they range from 10w-50w. i had three 20w on my 135 when it was planted and they did a good job. then i downgraded to the 10w and it grew my anubias really well with no algae what so ever. now i am currently using two 10w on my 135 to create that amazon theme.

they are fairly cheap. u can get the 10w for $20 and its already wired up and its plug and play. but the 20w version you will have to wire them yourself which is pretty easy with a spare cord and just connect the wires. unless u can find some 20w ones that are already wired for you. i love them cuz they create really nice shimmering effects. better then the led fixtures that has the many small leds. and the price is good.

Well...didn't take to long or put much thought into it but I just got a 20w(not wired) for $13.99 with free shipping! Sounded good to me!
