Custom PCB: screw terminals on top row are connections for the 4 LED channels. Middle row you'll see the four CAT4101 drivers. Bottom left terminal is 24v power supply connections. Bottom middle terminal is 12v power supply for microcontroller and ground connections. Bottom right terminal is for the PWM signals from microcontroller, and for manual override.

Fluorescent, LED to expensive and since my tanks are in the living room DIY is not an option(unless I want my wife to beat me in a non-fun way).

I am using some Reef Brite LED strip lights over my new 520 gallon freshwater ray tank. Depending on the tank size, depends on cost. They come in white, white/blue mix and all blue. They are plug and play, non-dimmable but are very effective. I am using the standard ones, not the new XHOs. I also am using some LED floodlights over my smaller 80 gallon growout tank with good luck. The 48" Reef Brite Strips are I think 30 watts each and the flood lights are 10w each.

LEDs are nice but they do come with a price tag. If you dont mind investing in LEDs thats the way to go!
